Lord Byagoona is, to put it bluntly, a little weird. Its soul hadn't fully recovered from its previous death, resulting in a disconnect between Byagoona and its body. Furthermore, both of its parents died at a young age and left it in the foster care system. It never had a stable family and ended up aging out of the system. Byagoona has an extreme form of Ehler-Danlos syndrome, which is a disorder characterized by an error in the structure of connective tissues. Byagoona's skin is delicate and easily torn, and its joints are very easily dislocated. This combined with a lack of a social life as a youth and a generally unstable home life resulted in Byagoona growing up to be a shut-in. After all, it was difficult to make friends when you couldn't play games with them and were generally regarded as weird. The ostracization by the living combined with the disquiet in Byagoona's soul meant that it tapped into its medium ability from a young age. It could see and talk to ghosts, and became enamoured with paranormal science. It eventually got a doctorate in paranormal science and published several papers on ghosts, though the general scientific community dismissed this as 'hack science.' Lord Byagoona started going exclusively by its online name after getting its doctorate. Despite being in a career that is considered to generally be a sham, it makes enough money to hire a live-in caretaker and lives in a comfy abode tailored to its needs. It maintains a ghost-themed blog where it talks extensively about its research on ghosts and how they work.
Its ghost blog is relatively obscure, but when Seth is looking for information on ghosts Lord Byagoona's work is the most reliable and consistent out there. Seth reaches out in several timelines to ask Byagoona questions about ghosts, and eventually Seth is forced to reveal the full truth to Lord Byagoona in order to get its help with Emily. In each new timeline Seth uses the codephrase "The faceless coils in on itself" to prove to Byagoona that Seth interacted with it in a previous timeline. With Seth being the first human to treat Byagoona with kindness and respect, Byagoona quickly learns to trust Seth and even becomes rains friend.
Lord Byagoona is eccentric, to say the least. It exclusively communicates through forum posts and comments on its own website, making heavy use of emoticons and old internet lingo. It typically types in all lowercase, but sometimes it will capitalize words for emphasis or to convey excitement. In real life, however, Lord Byagoona is incredibly shy. It zips its jacket all the way up, including its hood so its face cannot be seen. It uses a wheelchair and covers all of its skin to prevent any sort of damage to it. It struggles to speak verbally, keeping its sentences short and to the point. Its peppy online personality still shows through in the form of its wheelchair and hoodie. Lord Byagoona's hoodie is modeled to look like the Lovecraftian deity that it named itself after, and its wheelchair has RGB lights. Lord Byagoona is capable of walking, but using the wheelchair is safer and it will not stand unless absolutely necessary.
Byagoona quickly latches onto Seth as its best friend when rai reaches out to it and proves that rai had met it in a previous reset. Though Byagoona doesn't remember resets, it still helps Seth through them.
Byagoona thinks the Guide is a cool concept. It has a lot of questions for him, but he refuses to answer any of them.
Byagoona doesn't have particularly strong feelings about Alphonse, but since he's Seth's roommate it tries to be nice to him.
Byagoona is terrified of Eden, and for good reason.
Though there's a bit of tension between Byagoona and Casey since Casey wants Seth dead, they treat each other surprisingly cordially.
Byagoona cannot tell the Guide and the Flyman apart, so it feels the same way about both. The Flyman, instead of refusing to answer Byagoona's questions, often either gives it riddles or straight-out lies to chew on.
The world that all living things experience and interact with is known as 'the realm of the living.' It has a flow of time that can be disrupted by beings of significant enough power, and everything tangible is considered to be on this plane. Ghosts can interact with tangible items, and humans will be able to see their effects. Living beings cannot see ghosts themselves, however, except under special circumstances.
The realm of the dead is not a defined place like the realm of the living is, rather it's a secondary layer to reality similar to a drawing done on a clear sheet of paper being laid over a background. Though it generally follows the same timeline as the realm of the living, the realm of the dead cannot have its time flow disrupted or reversed and once it claims a person or an animal they're unable to return to their body under normal circumstances. The realm of the dead is not where the dead actually belong, rather it is a transitory space between their old life and their next one in the reincarnation cycle. It is the job of psychopomps to guide souls from this insubstantial realm and take them to their next path. Beings in the realm of the dead can interact with the realm of the living, but not vice versa. Dead souls are allowed to stay for as long as they'd like so long as they are peaceful, but if they turn violent they have to be forcibly removed.
Some souls remain close to the afterlife even on their new path and can access the realm of the dead in a limited capacity as a result. The likelihood of this connection increases if a fresh soul experiences a lot of death early in life. This can be anything from having several dead pets to a child's mother dying during childbirth. Exposure to death early in life is not a requirement, it simply makes it more likely for a soul to not interface completely with its body. These souls are mediums, capable of seeing and interacting with ghosts of all kinds. They are still alive, however, and thus follow the same rules and timeline as the living. Mediums have an easier time inviting ghosts into their body, which many mediums do to allow ghosts to speak with loved ones should a psychopomp not permit it directly. They do not need to perform elaborate rituals to do this, they remain conscious while hosting one, and they can evict the ghost at any time. Most mediums are never aware of their power outside of their ability to see ghosts. Some mediums are stronger than others: some are only as strong as being able to see shadows of ghosts while others can see and talk to ghosts as though standing in the realm of the dead themselves. Any animal can be a medium, with it being more common in cats than other animals.
