You first meet the player character in a graveyard visiting a grave. After being told you have 24 hours to do whatever you'd like, you assume control. You eventually meet Callie, who entreats you for help with her situation. She tells you about the killer in the woods, how they have killed all her friends and people no longer want to help her catch them. You have no choice but to accept, but you can be a little sarcastic about it if you wish. After telling her your name and preferred pronouns, she takes you to the woods to help her track down a killer.
Your personality is your own, but how much you can project onto the player character is limited by your dialogue options. Sarcasm and cynicism is a viable option, but so is altruistic kindness. You can question the narrative as much or as little as you'd like.
Due to the fact you control this character, the relationships this character has with others in the narrative are entirely within your own hands. You can be friendly or hateful. That said, the characters that you interact with directly are limited. Most characters are already dead by the time you meet them, after all.
You have a special gift: you're able to commune with the spirits of the dead in an extremely in-depth fashion. All you need is an item belonging to a dead person in the location they lost it and you can reach back in time to watch what happened. You can even influence the past slightly through this power, opening new paths for yourself in the present. You cannot save them, but perhaps they can save you.
